NLnet funding for EUDI Wallet/eIDAS 2.0 support

pac4j has been awarded a grant by NLnet through the NGI0 Commons Fund, which supports open technologies working towards a free, open and sovereign internet. The grant is dedicated to a single goal: bringing EUDI Wallet / eIDAS 2.0 support to pac4j.

Why it matters

The eIDAS 2.0 regulation requires every EU member state to provide its citizens with a European Digital Identity Wallet. For applications, this means a new way to authenticate users and to request verified attributes — and, for the Java ecosystem, no library covers it properly today.

pac4j has spent 15 years turning authentication protocols — OAuth, SAML, OpenID Connect, CAS — into one security engine usable from any Java framework. EUDI Wallet is simply the next protocol on that list.

What happens next

The work will be done in the pac4j repository and is targeted for pac4j v6.6.0, expected before the end of 2026.

The technical design is not settled yet and can evolve based on feedback/needs.
